The MAGNET4WATER (
M4W) cyberinfrastructure is owned and maintained by Hydrosimulatics INC., a small
business spin-off from Michigan State University (MSU) that began operations in 2019.
The Hydrosimulatics team of engineers and innovators is relatively small, but collectively has
significant cross-cutting experience and expertise – from hydrology and water management, to
spatial data processing and analysis, numerical modeling and computational aspects, and IT
and computer science. Representing the cumulative achievements over the past 25 years,
Hydrosimulatics has developed a first-of-its-kind,
cloud-powered, data-enabled, realtime
interactive platform for exploratory statistical data analysis, geostatistics, stochastic
modeling, and process-based modeling and visualization of various water systems
(both natural and designed), including: groundwater, watersheds (runoff and infiltration),
river and stream networks, urban catchments and storm-sewer networks, and drinking water distribution networks.
Real-World Experience & Consulting Services
Over the past two decades, members of our team have been involved in a number of water
resource investigations and management projects – from contamination and cleanup, to
long-term water use and environmental sustainability, and ecosystem protection and low
impact construction (see our
Case Studies page ).
A past emphasis has been placed on groundwater consulting, although our
M4W technology
and collective expertise of our team allows us to also tackle real-world problems relating
to surface water or urban water systems – in a way that is significantly cheaper and more
efficient for our clients.
Consulting Services in support of water resources / environmental management include:
-
Groundwater Modeling
-
Watershed Modeling
-
River Networks and Floodplains Modeling
-
Urban Water Systems Modeling
-
Water Distribution Systems Modeling
-
System Visualization and Conceptual Modeling (Data Visualization)
Databases and Data Service Development
The Hydrosimulatics team can help organizations and institutions create their own
custom standardized databases for holistic water / environmental management. A set of
web data services can be developed that allows team members to securely access
(via password authentication) and visualize and model with their data via the
internet, removing the need for individuals to download or move data from machine
to machine. The processed data is formatted following international Open Geospatial
Consortium standards, meaning they can work directly with the
M4W visualization and
simulation technologies (as well as other GIS based software).
Closed Platform Development
We can build confidential, geographically restricted (in terms of modeling area coverage,
not user access) instances of the
M4W platforms for organizations and institutions
requiring specific linkages to their existing datastores and/or unique workflows and
analyses to be built into the existing (general)
M4W platforms. The custom, “closed” platforms
benefit from the visualization and simulation capabilities of the general
M4W platforms
while also meeting the unique needs of the clients.
Education and Outreach
The Hydrosimulatics INC. team develops and provides access to a number of
M4W-based student
exercises, including: short reading / video assignments, homework problems, and capstone
projects. At this time, most of the content is centered on groundwater science and
engineering, but each platform has a set of growing curriculum materials.
