Storage Coefficients

What is it?

For transient simulations of groundwater systems, characterization of aquifer storage (specific yield or specific storage) is needed. Specific yield is defined as the volume of water that an unconfined aquifer releases from storage per unit surface area of aquifer per unit decline in the water table. Specific storage is defined as the volume of water that a unit volume of a confined aquifer releases from storage under a unit decline in hydraulic head, produced by: 1) compactions of the aquifer; and 2) expansion of water caused by decreasing pressure.

How to use it:

Specific Yield. Check the radio boxes next to ‘Specific Yield’ to apply the value (dimensionless) assigned in the corresponding text box.

Specific Storage. Check the radio boxes next to ‘Specific Storage’ to apply the value (1/[L]; 1/m) assigned in the corresponding text box.

Porosity. Check the radio boxes next to ‘Specific Storage’ to apply the value (dimensionless) assigned in the corresponding text box.
