Grid Refinement Options

Grid refinement is applied to the selected feature (point, line, or polygon) and creates a finer grid to resolve details and complexities of interest. Refinement is applied in two dimensions, both X (east - west) and Y (north - south).

The parameters are expressed in terms of the parent grid cell size. The parent grid is defined by the size of the domain and the number of grid cells (see Conceptual Model Tools > DomainAttr > Grid NX).

Grid Refinment Parameters

Grid Size Fraction : Grid Size Fraction: The size ratio of the parent grid to the refined grid cell. (e.g. a value of two indicates that there will be two refined cell faces for each parent face. If the grid size fraction for both X and Y is set equal to two, each parent cell will contain four refined cells.)

Buffer : The buffer length around the grid refinement object, measured in units of parent grid cell size. A value of two indicates that the refinement object will be expanded by two parent grid cells. Lines will be buffered separately in both directions of the chosen dimension, +X, -X or +Y, -Y, points and polygons will be buffered in all dimensions using the larger buffer value (X or Y), around the whole point/polygon.

Thresholds : The maximum number of parent cells allowed on the side of an object's refinement boxes. The default of "0" indicates no maximum value, and a single refinement box will be used to enclose the refinement object. A larger number will provide fewer refinement boxes to encompass the refinement object, a smaller number will provide a tighter refinement zone, at the expense of more refinement boxes.

Transitions (Under Development): The number of transition levels to use between the refinement object and the parent grid.
