USGS Sensor and PRISM Climate Data Extraction

Workflow context
For the workflow context, see 📘 Watershed Coupling (SwaNET/SWAT)
This interface is used to define the inputs/settings for extraction of USGS sensor data (e.g., monitoring wells and stream gages) and PRISM Climate Data for the United States.

Only one type of data (sensor vs. climate) may be extracted at once. If the USGS Sensor Data tool was selected, the 'Extract Climate Data' button is disabled, and if the Climate Data tool was selected, 'Extract Sensor Data' is disabled. ('Analysis Tools' > 'Data Explorer' > ...)

Temporal Filter

Use the input fields to the define the temporal limits of sensor or data climate extraction. The default starting date (Jan. 1, 1981) is the starting date for the PRISM data. The default end date is today's date.

Temporal coverage for sensor data varies from site-to-site.

Climate Data

Climate data is available at daily Temporal resolution , but users may choose to extract monthly or yearly averaged data (which results in faster extraction time) if it meets their needs (e.g., when doing long-term analysis).

Three Parameters or climate data types are available: precipitation, minimum temperature, and maximum temperature. A single parameter or any combinations of parameters can be extracted (more parameters means longer processing time).

Extraction location

Whereas USGS sensor data can be collected over an area, PRISM climate data is extracted at a point (single grid cell). The point is indicated by the coordinates in the Longitude and Latitude input boxes. Enter the coordinates directly, or click on the map display to update the coordinates. USGS Sensor Data

Users can select 'Location Only' as the Download Type to first show locations of sensor sites before extracting the full site attributes, which can take much longer.

By default, a filter is applied when downloading full site attributes to remove sites with no data. Uncheck the box next to 'Remove sites with no data' to remove the filter.

Use the checkboxes to control the type of sensor (groundwater and/or surface water) that will be extracted (location only or full site attributes).

Click the 'Extract Sensor Data' button to start the downloading process. When it is finished, markers will appear on the map display at the site locations. Click on a marker to see the site-specific attributes. (Note: if 'Location Only' was selected, the groundwater and surface water data tables will be empty.) USGS webpage: Water Data for the Nation
